A BUNCH OF BUTTINSKIS

We arrived back at the house to find Amory knocking at the front door.

“I just came over to check on the party plans,” she said. “Saturday at three, right?”

“You did not come over to check on the party plans!” Cassie said. “You smelled the onion soup.”

“Guilty! The smell wafted over to my house, and I came over to barge in for lunch.”

Amory held her hand out to the policewoman. “Hello! It’s Carla, right? I’m Amory Bernstein, Bob Bernstein’s wife. I’ve seen you at the first responder softball games.”

“Hi, I recognize you,” said Officer Reyes, shaking Amory’s hand. “Bob’s a good shortstop. Fast. He’s a good medical examiner, too.”

“Can we please go in and eat?” said Cassie. “I am so hungry! My blood sugar is crashing after its high this morning from those cupcakes.”

“Oooh, do we have cupcakes?” asked Amory.

I opened the door and motioned everyone in.

“Not anymore,” I said. “Cassie ate them all. No wonder she had such a sugar high and is now crashing. She’s going to end up with diabetes.”

“Don’t get uppity, Miss High and Mighty. You ate two of them yourself. I’ll set another plate while you finish the crostini, Mags.”

Amory and Officer Reyes sat down at the kitchen table and chatted about mutual softball players they knew while I put the baguette slices into the oven, set the timer, and started on coring, seeding, and dicing the tomatoes for the crostini.

I turned the flame on under the soup. It wouldn’t take long to heat up again. I dressed the salad with a simple vinaigrette and placed the bowl on the table.

“Dig in!” I said.

“Listen,” said Officer Reyes, turning to Cassie and me, “It’s silly for us to be so formal with each other. You’ve fed me twice now. I know I rebuffed you when you told me to call you Maggie, but that’s because we’re not supposed to get chummy during an investigation. I think I’ll forgo that in this case, if it’s okay with you all. You can call me Carla, and I’ll call you Maggie and Cassie. Except if the chief is around. Is that okay?”

“It’s about time!” said Cassie, “I thought we were going to have to have a banquet in your honor before you’d let us call you by your first name.”

“Yes, that would be good. Thanks, Carla.”

We started in on the salad, and no one spoke for a minute. We were simply enjoying the food.

Suddenly, Amory put down her fork and dabbed her mouth with her napkin.

“Oh! I forgot to tell you I heard from that friend of mine that used to live out west where Lanie lived. Lanie’s ex-husband is out of prison, and he moved back east and is living in or near Boston.”

Amory looked around at us all for our reactions. Cassie looked interested. I looked embarrassed. Carla looked annoyed.

“Maggie! I asked you not to do any detecting on your own. It’s dangerous.”

I held my hand out to ward off Carla’s wrath. “Not my fault! I talked to Amory about Lanie and her ex before I spoke to you.
